Back on November 22nd, 2016, Barack Obama presented the Presidential Medals of Freedom to 21 noteworthy individuals, both alive and deceased. Among the recipients were iconic musician Bruce Springsteen, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, and former athlete Michael Jordan.

Fast forward to January 11th, 2017, The Barbed Wire published an altered version of the photograph. They created a photoshopped image depicting Barack Obama seemingly awarding himself the “Greatest President Ever” Medal in an article humorously titled “Obama Awards Himself – Greatest President Ever’ Medal During Farewell”.

After January 11th, 2017, when the edit was posted by Newszii memes began to circulate on social media.
On January 12th, an unidentified Redditor shared the initial meme inspired by the image on the /r/memes subreddit. Within six months, the post garnered more than 820 likes. Over the years, the image gained online popularity as both a meme and a tool for humor or criticism towards the former president.
