Origin Of The Where Banana Meme
On January 19th, 2017, BBC Breakfast aired a segment showcasing an animatronic “spy animal” from the upcoming wildlife series Spy in the Wild. In that episode, two hosts ask questions to a Monkey, as seen in the video template above.
The internet community took the scene further by Photoshopping the image, swapping the two hosts with monkeys. So, the image became a Photoshop series of three monkeys in one frame. Additionally, “Where Banana”, a text was also added, and that’s how the Monkey meme format came into existence.

However, it wasn’t until the end of 2019 that the image gained notable popularity, thanks to a widely circulated Photoshop.
On October 8th, Redditor /u/thattaylornerd posted a screenshot to /r/boottoobig titled “Roses are red, I put rubbish in the bin.” The post featured a now-deleted tweet with text reading, “When you’re just trying to chill w/ friends and the dissociation kicks in,” accompanied by a screenshot of the orangutan and hosts on BBC Breakfast. This post garnered over 3,000 upvotes in three years.
Beyond, Reddit the meme template also became popular on other social media platforms as well.
